Back in 2006 with a picture of couple kissing in the Louvre Gardens, Paris.

It is the great thing about Paris. It's unique architecture, the way that some of its areas are designed make it more recognisable than any others cities in the world. The Tuileries Garden is a great place for photographers. There are many chance to build something through a world of horizontal and vertical lines with some great perspectives. It is quite obvious in the picture above. This couple kissing seems to be the only soft shape in this beautiful but kind of rigid and well organised environment. Charming and imperial place for a kiss.

Even when the weather is miserable you can feel something special in Istanbul.
Melancholy seems to belong to the Turkish world, a feeling that in the imperial city is especially palpable along its coast.
The Golden Horn is an estuary dividing the city of Istanbul. The famous Galata Bridge, busy night and day with fishermen, traffic and pedestrians, connect the area of Eminonu to Karakoi.
This picture was taken from Karakoi. Opposite, on the third hill of Istanbul is the Suleymanyie Mosque (cami in Turkish). A wonderful Ottoman monument ordered by Sultan Süleyman. It was finished to be build in 1558.

Istanbul: I didn't like it, I felt in love with it. Its unique character, its light, its wonderful skyline … its atmosphere unlike any other city that I have visited. A city of history, capital of the Byzantine and Ottoman empires. A place where Asia meets Europe, where the tradition of an ancient city meets the western way of life. A city of extremes and contrasts. A land where the legendary Bosporus merges with the Golden Horn and links the black sea and the Mediterranean sea through the sea of Marmara with indescribable magic. I only spent eight days there visiting its main sites and walking around its different areas. I could have wandered its streets endlessly, looking to capture its everyday life through its timeless atmosphere. No doubt one of the greatest places on earth. I will be back in Istanbul as soon as possible as I want to further explore its history, its culture and to meet its people.

I will create a feature in the documentary section of my website in the near future. Check my blog. I am going to show more photos of the great city of Istanbul in the next few days.

I am looking over the Bagmati river, a river worshipped both by Hindus and Buddhists. It is polluted with plastic bags and rubbish slowing down its flow. It is heartless and sad to see a holy river in such a state. I am off for a walk on the Bagmati river bank. I have always been curious to know what life is like next to the Bagmati river, especially outside the Hindu site of Pashupatinath. A few hours earlier as I was looking at the Kathmandu map in my room, I decided to get to the closest point of the river on foot. I am on my own. As I am going down the river bank, I've got no idea what to expect. I've got a feeling of desolation keeping in mind this image of pollution when I was looking over the river on the bridge earlier. To be honest, I was not surprised. I knew it. This is not the first time I have seen something like this. One of its tributaries, the Bishnumati river has the same destiny. Anyway, I am aware that today, what I may see is just a small slice of the Bagmati life but I want to see a part of its reality, witness it and record it if I've got the chance to get some shots.

As I am walking along the river, a father is busy cleaning his children. Some shepherdesses are with their goats. A sadhu is proud to show me his amazing long dreadlocks and seems to relax looking at the flow of the sacred river. Baba Mola lives by the Bagmati river bank within a sadhu community. We don't speak the same language. It is frustrating. There is nobody around me to translate what could be an interesting and friendly conversation. It's a shame. I immortalize this encounter by taking two portraits.

I am now back on the river bank. The smell is sometimes strong but not unbearable. Some Nepalese women fill buckets with water. As I am entering an ancient temple to look at its architecture, there are obvious signs that some people are squatting the temple* but no one is in there right now. Near by other temples are used as warehouses to recycle plastic. I am walking towards a couple of men. One of them is busy cutting some wood with a massive axe. I want to take a picture of the environment surrounding the Bagmati including both men. I am not that sure about it and the picture is not great.

As the sun is going down, I am heading to my hotel. I feel disconcerted and frustrated. Poverty, abandoned temples, pollution seem to be the reality of this part of the Bagmati. Although the river should be just joy, here it is just a miserable place. There is still some poetry to be found in the river bank though. It comes from the people living around, using the water, passers by or sadhus. They give the place life. Life is hope. But the hope to save this river from pollution has little chance to come from these people. It will come from the governement, the Kathmandu council with probably the help of international organisations. Very little seems to be done considering the state of some of the places. Meanwhile people still using the river as a source of water at their own risk.

* I will be told by a Nepalese friend, that they are poor people coming from outside Kathmandu in a hope of finding jobs.

It is quite sunny this morning in Edinburgh. It sounds like it's going to be a great day and it is hard to believe that the weather forecast is heavy snow tomorrow. I still prefer to think that the week end will be sunny or it's going to make me miss sunny places like Ko Chang in Thailand. Ko Chang is a small island situated on the south east coast of Thailand just south of Trat where most of the Thais and tourists take the ferry boat. The island is a National Park and a real paradise. It has been nicely preserved from mass tourism. In 2005, I stayed three days near by Lonely beach, at the time a wild sandy beach surrounded by a few nice bamboo bungalows and a bar-restaurant. A very good and relaxing time. I definitely don't want to see snow tomorrow.

I was wandering the lanes of Tunis' Medina when from the distance I heard the sound of someone running. I didn't know if it was a young girl or a young boy. I knew that it was not an adult step. The sound was too gentle. I didn't know if the sound was coming towards me or if it would disappear into the distance. It got closer, and louder until my camera shutter made a "click". She kept running. She was gone.

On the 18th January, the weather and conditions were good enough to track sheep in order to take away the males from the rest of the flock. With the help of six crofters (including three on quad bikes) and a few dogs, around 473 hectares of land in Holm field were covered. The task was to guide and gather the sheep spread all over the hills, into a sheep pen, take the males and free the others. While men on quad bikes drove all over the place, pushing the sheep in the right direction, crofters on foot circled the flock, guiding them towards the pen with huge help from their dogs. The job ended after two hours of tracking. Peter managed to find only one of his males out of three. Hopefully by the time now he managed to get the two others.

Above is the kitchen where I used to have my breakfast, lunch and dinner during my two weeks stay in Laprak, Nepal. This was also the house of my welcome family.
The house was made of three rooms: 1 bedroom, 1 kitchen and 1 room where potatoes, bean, corn, millet and rice were stock. The kitchen was the main room where guests were welcomed and where family gathered at night for dinner. At dusk, some of the neighborhood, friend of my family, regularly came to share some of their meal and enjoy a chat while having a soup, Nepalese wine, tea or just tatopani (hot water). During my two weeks my diet was made of fried rice/fried potatoes/fried pasta mixed with green vegetables, boiled/fried eggs, dhal bat (lentils soup, bean, potatoes, rice, vegetable, spice), momo, nuggets made of corn wheat and chapati*. I had some meat sometimes but it was quite rare. Usually meat is shared between unhabitants when an animal, like pork or buffalo is killed. They are usually slaughtered on a special event like holy festival. Chicken are everywhere in the village but not everyday in your plate. They do the job of laying eggs everyday. Most of the Nepalese people eat only Dhal Bhat twice a day all year long. Dhal Bhat in remote places of Nepal are really not like those you can have in the touristic area of Thamel in Kathmandu. They are usually poorer and rely on the quality of the vegetables growing in the land surrounding villages* and how wealthy is a family in order to buy and cooked extra ingredients in it.

Sometimes porters looking for a place to sleep, used to have dinner in the house before staying for the night. Most of them belonged to trekking groups on their way to Larkia Pass (5200m) on the Around the Manaslu trek.

*In general, corn, millet, rice, condiments, potatoes, green vegetables and beans make up most of the Gurung cultivations, allowing inhabitants of villages to live from their own products.

I've started working some of my photographs taken during a sufi ceremony in Fes. Sufism is a mystical side of Islam, especially popular in countries like Morocco and Senegal but can be find in asuch a place like Turkey, Indian and Pakistan for instance. During the ceremony, the Hmadcha brotherhood played for around a two hours in order to bring Barakah to the family (means happiness and blessing). In their dancing, people mimic the rocking movement of the music, rhythm and singing causing people going into a trance. As the ceremony progresses the music become more intense.

It could be me on this picture. It is probably what I feel like this morning, relaxing, before starting my day. I'm currently looking for a UK based photo agency specialised in travel & documentaries. I must process some pictures of a sufi ceremony taken during my last journey in Morocco, do some administrative work, organise some of my prints to sell in a Art Market this week end. Dakshinkali temple is situated just outside the village of Pharping at around 45mn by bus from Kathmandu. Dedicated to the goddess Kali, the temple is at its busiest time on a Saturday and Tuesday when thousands of Hindu devotees, mainly from Nepal and India, invade the sanctuary to worship the goddess and sacrifice animals. It is said that around 3000 animals, mostly cockerel and male goats are offered to Kali every week.
Hidden down a hill, the temple is surrounded by a forest where at morning time, magical sunlight goes through the deep vegetation and smoke of burning offerings. In the fresh air, the smell of incense and the sound of bells ringing is continuous. All over the site, devotees are quietly queuing to enter the temple. In their hands are flowers, coconuts, rice, goats and cockerels to be offered to Kali. They believe that by giving offerings to the goddess Kali, she will deliver them from misfortune and fulfil their wishes.

The Format International Photography Festival 2011 in Derby will open its doors in a few days. It sounds very very promising. This year the theme is especially interesting. "Right Here, Right Now, Exposures from the public realm" is in some way a celebration of Street photography. Exhibitions will show photographs from Alex Webb, Bruce Gilden, Bruno Barbey, Constantine Manos, Ragu Rhai, Trente Park, Vivian Mayer and many other great photographers. Corpus Christi is the most impressive event I had the chance to see in South America so far. During the day, fifteen saints and virgins are carried around the Plaza de Armas while brass band play traditional music. During their walk, carriers have a few break before getting the Cusco cathedral where the saints and virgins will stay two weeks.
Peruvian people celebrate it with music, local alcohols and traditional dishes.

I could tell that during the all day, the weather was freezing cold, with icy wind and snow storm. Though I managed to spend the most of my time outside, hiking around West Burra island on the west coast of Shetland (just South of Scalloway) before getting Peter and Alexandra croft and then going out again to follow them in their work. Just after this shot my camera, EOS 5D Mark II, did an error 20. I was just enable to take any more shot or use my camera in any way (even without lens). The only best thing I could do was to switch the camera off. Gutted, I made some search on the web and found some information that make me undestand that my issue might be related to weather, humidity, cold and temperature variation. Humidity/moisture seemed to get into my camera body (not good). I left it drying all night. The following day it was working again, allowing me to enjoy my coffee more than usual. Since I haven't been able to reproduce the error (crossed fingers). It was definitely related to dampness and temperature variation. Good to know but not good to experience.

I took this picture in 2009 when I first met Balmaya. I spent sometimes helping her sorting out some soya beans in front of her house without imagining that the following year I will be staying in the village of Laprak speaking to her again. I was very glad to see her again as she is a lovely and very smily person ... also because I had the chance to offer her a print of this picture above. In November 2010, I stayed two weeks in Laprak exploring Gurung culture, traditions and everydaylife, so I was able with the help of my guide, Yam, to have a few chat with her. Laprak is a village situated in the Gorkha district at around three days walk from the nearest bus station either you walk to Arughat or Chanaute. No electricity but at night time from 5.30am to 8am. In brief, a village in a remote area surrounded by amazing landscapes but poor conditions of living (but not the worse in Nepal). From our talks, there are two points that I especially keep in mind. Two very important points. When I asked her what was in her opinion the most important change that alter the everyday life of her village in the last few years, she replied me that was the opening of a school and a health medical centre.
So, we westerners, we should just not forget where we are from and how we have reached such a quality of life. Governements of developped countries should understand that they are two things we should protect from cut. It is education and health services. Let's go forward not backward.

On my way to Laos, I stopped in Kratie for one night only. The Mekong river is probably the best attraction in the city along with surrounding villages on the river bank. It doesn't really show in the picture above but at dry season, the water level of the Mekong river can be quite low in some part of it. It is an opportunity to walk in the middle of it and explore the river life.

I ended up in this Café with a Moroccan man trying to sell me some postcards. He didn't success to sell me anything but after a while, he asked me if I could offer him a coffee and said "yes". This café bar had the same smell as any coffee shop in the middle of the red light district in Amsterdam. A traditionnal Old Men Café with plenty of men watching TV while having coffee and smoking any kind of cigarette. Mohammed was at the same table as mine. I couldn't understand a word of what he was saying but at the same time I couldn't blame him as my moroccan is too bad. However among the other men in the café, he seemed to be a character. I wanted to get a portrait of him but the opportunity was not there. At some point as I was ordering another round of coffee for my moroccan friends for the evening, he "kind of urgently" asked for a violin shouting at the waiver. He took him around 5 minute to get it and he played less than one minute letting me just the time to take this image.

I have already mentionned the dramatic landscape of Point of Fethaland in a previous post. The day I visited it, it was pretty windy, so I didn't dare getting closer to the cliff edge. Looking at the ability of the seagulls flying into such a strong wind was quite a show. May to September is the best time to observe wildlife in Shetland. Nature-shetland.co.uk seems to be a good website if you want to find out more about it.

While my guide was having a chat with a friend of him, I spent sometimes observing some children playing. At some point, as things started to be a bit wilder, I decided to get a little bit closer and took this shot.
Nothing special in Jagat. It is a quite small village along the impressive Budhi Gandaki river. The place is situated between Tatopani (975m) and Philim (1590m) where most the trekkers stopped on their way to the Manaslu.
By the way, as far as I am aware, there are two Jagat in Nepal. One village is in the Lamjung district (along the Marsyangdi river) and the one I am talking about is in the Gorkha district.

3pm on the 6th January, on my way back to the coast of Burwick, I kneeled in a beautiful frozen field in the hill of Houlland in order to take the shape of the fence and the great sunset. It is cold but it is nothing compare to the snow storm that I ran into a few hours before. The light and the character of this landscape is amazing.

The best place to explore Hmong Markets in Northern Vietnam is not in Sapa. Sapa is just the closest and easiest place to go. A few hours drive from Sapa are the Hmong villages of Can Cau and Bac Ha. Every Saturday at Can Cau and every Sunday at Bac Ha, ethnic minorities, from villages all around, gather to sell food, handicrafts, tools, tabacco, medecine, material and clothes, animals and everything they need in their daily lives. Don't miss it if you plan to travel in Northern Vietnam. Both markets and surronding landscapes are amazing.

Harvest time is usually around November. During my stay in Laprak, a Gurung village situated in the Gorkha district, I helped harvest soya bean. There were a few fields with soya bean plantations, but most of the soya bean plants were scattered throughout millet fields making the process of picking them quite slow. Soya beans were then put in a basket before being shelled.

Laprak has a primary and secondary school, so the children who are lucky enough to be sponsored and study at school only work in the fields during school holidays. However, because parents need the help of their children, a few of them give up school before reaching high school. Currently, boys are more likely to study than girls.

I found it quite easy to travel by bus in Morocco. In contrast with some Asian countries, Moroccan buses don't stop every kilometer to pick up a new customer, a motorbyke to put on the bus roof or to get a hen to drop at the next village (but I love it. It is part of the charm and just make the journey endless). So it is quite a good thing sometimes. I tried both private companies and state company. CTM, the state company, has definitely some of the best buses.
On the picture above, I was travelling from Tetouan to Chefchaouen using CTM. As far as I remember the journey was around four hours including one stop. Some guide book mentionned that it is easy to get Chefchaouen but not easy to leave it. It is true. Not only because it is a beautiful and a quiet place but because there are only a few buses leaving it everyday. So it is worth booking your seat in advance. Travelling in bus from Tetouan and Chefchafouen was quite frustrating. The dry landscape of the rif mountains was quite impressive and I would have loved to stop for a few shot sometimes.

Since a few months ago, the name of Andrew McConnell, didn't mean anything to me. It's when I visited Panos Pictures that I discovered his work and his great story about The Cataracts. When last month, I bought the UK magazine Geographical that I had the pleasure to look at his new work about The Last Colony telling the story of the Saharawi people. It happens that thanks to this photo series, he recently won the 1st prize in the Portrait stories category of this year's World Press Photo contest. There is nothing surprising about it. Amsterdam is one of my favourit city in Europe. I've got some relatives living there so I regularly go to the capital of Holland to visit them. A cool quiet place where it is nice to wander, especially at springtime. I took this picture of a couple kissing in May 2010 on a day when the light was just wonderful. So it is not really a new picture but I though that could match quite well with the theme of the day. But if you are like me you may think that St Valentin day is nice but you don't need to wait for it to celebrate love. The very good think about it is that it is a good excuse to open a nice bottle of red wine.

Ekle Bhatti is a Gurung village on the slope of Lumbo Himal mountain. I just had lunch there before walking to Korlabeshi. When I entered in the village, she was the first person I met. I liked the way she was seated and the colours of her clothes were matching quite well with the tones of the wall and the wood in the background.
I also like the way the Gurung women put their shawls on their head. In some ways, I find it quite charming.

If you like rainbows, you will love Shetland. The good thing about Shetland is that the country is so windy that the weather is changing all the time, for better or worst, it is never the same each hour (to be honest I could say every 5 minutes). So it is quite easy to get this kind of image. It is both a dream and nightmare for photographers. However when the sunlight go through a dark stormy sky, it is like a fairy tales landscape. I found the weather a little bit similar to the Isle of Harris where I stayed in January 2010. However, although the Isle of Harris is a windy land, it is nothing compare to Shetland. Let's take the day as it comes used to say Peter, a crofter who I followed in his work in Shetland. I could understand why. Life in Shetland definitely depends on the weather.

The Vendée coast offers some of the prettiest coastal landscapes in France with plenty of pine tree forests, dunes, wild beaches and marshy land. Les Sables d'Olonne, St Jean de Mont and St Gilles Croix de Vie are among the most popular seaside destinations, where tourists from France and all over Europe, sunbathe in summertime.
Most of these seasides are old fishing villages whose population doubles at the peak of the season. Sadly, buildings started to be built in order to grow tourism. Most of them are holiday apartments let between April to September. The rest of the year, they look like miserable abandonned buildings.

Shetland Fire Festivals

Around a thousand years ago, when Vikings moored off the Shetland coast, they cleared everything in their path before colonising the island and bringing with them their farming methods, their language, culture and traditions. In the 15th century when the daughter of the King of Denmark married James III of Scotland, the land of Shetland was returned to Scotland. Since then, Shetland culture has been strongly influenced by Scottish traditions but Shetlanders have never forgotten their roots, retaining their Viking traditions and language.

Among the Viking cultural traditions was the feast of Yule, a celebration of the rebirth of the sun where people from the North used to eat, drink and dance around bonfires. Also known as Uphalliday, it was changed some years later to Up Helly Aa.

Nowadays, the celebration, although more organised, remains almost the same as it was many years ago. It is celebrated throughout Sheltand but Up Helly Aa in Lerwick is the biggest and most impressive one. For the people of Sheltand, it means the end of the winter, the start of longer days and the beginning of a New Year. In these traditional festivals, there is a sense of fraternity, friendship and solidarity that probably only exists in places like the community of Shetland. The community in the island is strong and fire festivals are in some way a celebration of the whole Shetland community. A fantastic way to say good bye to the previous year and look back at it with humour and satire throughout the day and night.

Although the torchlight procession and the burning of the galley in the early evening is the most spectacular part of it, for the Guizer Jarl and his squad, it is a long day, starting in the early morning until early morning the next day. They begin the day by marching in the town before escorting the galley, visiting hospitals, nurseries, primary schools and having receptions at the local halls. Food and drinks accompany the Guizer Jarl and his Squad throughout the celebration. And the procession and the hall celebrations approach, the atmosphere becomes more and more festive.

To be a Guizer Jarl is a great honour. On the day of the celebration, he is certainly the most important man in Shetland. Some of them wait for15 years to enter the history book of Shetland fire festivals. The pride of being a Guizer Jarl probably reaches its peak at the procession and when he enters the burning site, where the galley will be set on fire, with his squad and other guizer squads. Then, starts a long crazy night where the official squad is cheered all night long when visiting halls where people eat, drink and dance to traditional Shetland music, like their Viking ancestors used to do.

To make this photo documentary, I followed two fire festivals: Scalloway fire festival and Up Helly Aa in Lerwick. At Scalloway, I spent the whole day with the official squad before partying at the Scalloway British legion hall. During Up Helly Aa, I mainly focused on the procession before enjoying music, dance, food, drink and the guizer squads at the TA Hall.

I travelled to Battambang from Siem Reap by boat. It was really good except that at dry season the level of water in some parts of the Stung Sangker river is quite low. At one point, we had to continue the journey on the back of a pick up. We were packed in like sheep and cows enjoying the cambodian snow (dust). Good experience anyway ...

What is Digital C Type prints?

Bhaktapur is probably my favourit place in the Khatmandu valley. It is a lovely medieval town with some wonderful temples and some great traditional Newari buildings. If you plan to travel in Nepal, don't go there for just one day but think of staying at least two night in order to experience the atmosphere of it.

If you're lucky enough to live in Liverpool, in May go to the Walker Art Gallery to visit the exhibition Like you've never been away by Paul Trevor. According to the Walker Art Gallery, "Paul Trevor came to Liverpool in 1975 as part of the 'Survival Programmes' project, which looked at inner city deprivation. The young snapper spent several months recording family life on the fringes of the city centre, concentrating in Granby and Everton".

The streets of Kathmandu and remote paths of Nepal wouldn't be the same without porters. They are ones who carry tourists' loads, food and tents on the trekking paths. They are ones along with mules or yaks who carry loads to provide remote villages with food, mail and parcels, equipment and farm animals like hens and sheep. They are also those like messengers who sometimes carry twice their height in loads from a street to another in Kathmandu.*
* The recommended load is supposed to be 30kg.

Carrying loads is a big business in Nepal and for people an important way of making money (especially with tourism) and so bringing some ruppees into their families and communities. An agency usually pays a porter around 500 Nepalese Ruppees (£4) or more per day (+ tips from trekkers). For the higher wage, it does include food. However for most of the time, food and lodgings are not included. Like guides, they sometimes sleep wherever they can when no rooms are available in a guesthouse or the price is too high. It could be in a tent, a guesthouse kitchen or in the home of anyone kind enough to welcome them for a night and for a low fee. During my stay in Laprak (Gorkha district), I used to see porters staying at night with my host family. There were 5, 6 or 7 of them, sleeping on the floor in the room used for storing food. They usually use a mattress, a sleeping bag or a blanket.

Porters are mostly men of any kind of age. However, there are more and more women leaving their villages to work as porters. On my last trek (around the Manaslu), I came across many young porters aged between 16 and 20. For most of them, it is a way of saving money for studying, probably a way to visit a bit of the country and to have the chance to speak and practice their english with foreigners.

The higher you walk the higher is the food price. Most of the Nepalese people eat Dhal Bat (the national dish) at least twice a day. However when price is to high for a Dhal Bat, porters save money by eating food like fried potatoes. During my short stay in Bimtang (3800m), my guide, Yam, told me that we could not stay here for ever. The price of a Dhal Bat was to expensive. It was 200 Nepalese Rupree (£2).
